April is National Poetry Month

I hope everyone has had a great spring break or is having a spring break. Time with the family is always good. Relaxation is a must so why not grab a book of poems. Since I am in graduate school, I've emersed myself into Shakespeare. William Shakespeare was ahead of his time with works like Hamlet, Othello, Much Aso About Nothing, and Macbeth. I can remember reading Romeo and Juliet and being so put off by the story until I got to Macbeth. Everything changes. These are the plays, of course, characters trying to make a place for themselves like The Merchant of Venice. Characters fighting with themselves to whether kill an uncle in Hamlet or fighting with guilt as in Macbeth.

These plays all paint a picture of the human condition as we struggle to daily things big or small. Poetry is telling a story. It's not long or even covers a page. It can three lines or three hundred lines, poetry is the words from the soul that ever has. We all can be poets if given the time and inspiration. I'll have to dig up my own poetry from my days in high school. I think it'll help a few people as I leave you with Shakespeare.

Sonnet 43

When most I wink, then do mine eyes best see,

For all the day they view things unrespected;

But when I sleep, in dreams they look on thee,

And darkly bright, are bright in dark directed.

Then thou, whose shadow shadows doth make bright,

How would thy shadow’s form form happy show

To the clear day with thy much clearer light,

When to unseeing eyes thy shade shines so!

How would, I say, mine eyes be blessed made

By looking on thee in the living day,

When in dead night thy fair imperfect shade

Through heavy sleep on sightless eyes doth stay!

All days are nights to see till I see thee,

And nights bright days when dreams do show thee me.
